Lingual orthodontic appliances
Adult patients often refuse to wear orthodontic appliances bonded to the outer aspects of their teeth because they are visible when speaking.
In order to offer orthodontic treatment for these patients, orthodontists began some 20 years ago, to use braces bonded to the inner aspects of the teeth that are completely invisible during normal activity.
The first results were not encouraging because the appliances were not yet fully developed and sufficient training with the new treatment wasn't available.
We offer new appliances, which are extremely flat and thus comfortable for the patient. Most problems of traditional lingual appliances have been resolved by this appliance. Now we have only few tongue irritations and speech problems, and the rate of lost brackets has declined dramatically.
With lingual orthodontics today, almost all orthodontic tasks can be resolved with excellent results.
The comfort when speaking or eating is slightly reduced compared to the traditional, visible braces, but after a few weeks of adaptation adults usually fully adapt to the lingual appliance.
An important disadvantage of lingual treatment is the high cost, which is at least twice the cost of a standard treatment.
In cooperation with an excellent lab technician we can do all the labwork in the office, while most other orthodontist depend on specialised dental labs far away from their offices. So we are much more flexible in handling these limited lingual treatments.
INVISALIGN
The U.S. Company Align Technologies has introduced the Invisalign appliance to the German market in the summer 2001. These appliances, called aligners, are thin, transparent splints, which can be put in and removed by the patient. While speaking and laughing, the aligner is nearly invisible and can be removed during meals.
One Aligner product produces very small tooth movement, so Align Technologies with the aid of today's latest computer technology produces a series of appliances. Each Aligner is worn two weeks and then is replaced by the next appliance after that period, the treatment results are achieved in many small steps.
Treatment fees are very much the same as with traditional fixed appliances, while treatment time is much longer in most cases.
It is very important to point out that the application of the Invisalign appliance is restricted to relatively simple cases. I think that we could treat roughly half of our adult patients successfully with this system and it is possible to treat younger patients if their permanent teeth are fully erupted.
