In recent years, huge strides have been made in the treatment of cartilage and bone defects. The success of Tissue Engineering has led to significant advances in these areas. Thanks to this new technology, we can manufacture autologous tissue that is much more than a "biological spare part".

Using its considerable experience with tissue engineering products, BioTissue Technologies has made a significant contribution to establishing cell transplants in many areas of medicine. Our high-quality 3D cartilage and bone cell transplants represent state-of-the-art technology.

A range of successful applications demonstrate that, by transplanting autologous 3D cartilage and bone cell transplants, defective tissue can be reconstructed and restored, so it can function properly again.

It’s their properties that make our products special. The 3-dimensional matrix provides cells with the ideal environment, stimulating them to produce their tissue-specific matrix. We can now pass on our extensive experience and this exceptional technology to our clients.

It offers new and exciting opportunities for doctors specialising in orthopaedics/accident surgery, dental, oral and maxillofacial surgery and means that patients now have the chance to maintain their quality of life.

product overview

BioTissue Technologies operates primarily in two specialist areas - orthopaedics/accident surgery and dental, oral and maxillofacial surgery. Our autologous cartilage and bone products have been in clinical use since late 2001.

Orthopaedics/accident surgery

A very promising indication for tissue engineering products is cartilage and bone replacement in orthopaedics and surgical medicine.

  • BioSeed®-C is an autologous 3-dimensional chondrocyte graft which is used to treat articular cartilage defects in the femoral condyle, tibia plateau, talus or acetabulum.

Dental, oral and maxillofacial surgery

  • BioSeed®-Oral Bone is a 3D jawbone graft used to reconstruct the jaw bone, for example in sinus lift operations or lower jaw augmentation. It has been in clinical use since 2001 and has also become established in practice.

3-dimensional tissue technology

We lead the field in 3-dimensional tissue technology. As well as a 3-dimensional chondrocyte graft, with unique properties such as mechanical stability that make it suitable for arthroscopic grafts, we also offer 3-dimensional autologous bone grafts, based on the same technology.

The first step is to isolate the cells from their biological matrix and multiply them with autologous serum. During the subsequent cultivation phase, they are absorbed into a form that corresponds to the original matrix, a 3-dimensional and biocompatible 2-component matrix.

One component of this matrix is the framework structure of the graft, a resorbable polymer fleece. Its pore size facilitates the 3D distribution of cells and yet consists of only 10% material. A resorbable gel component fixes the patient's own cells homogenously and 3-dimensionally in the pores of the polymer carrier matrix.

Preclinical trials have shown that cells in this 3-dimensional environment begin to redifferentiate and thus assume their original form and function.

This patented technology was developed by Dr. Michael Sittinger and his team at the Berlin Charité University of Medicine.

BioSeed®-C

  • Patented, stable, three-dimensional matrix
  • Unique, secure fixation
  • Form and shape stability
  • Treatment of defects with sub-optimal surrounding cartilage
  • Approx. 20x106 cells per cm3
  • GMP manufacturing
  • Flexible scheduling for transplantation
  • Delivery to all of Europe
  • Implantation 3 weeks after removal
  • More than 500 patients successfully treated

Thanks to autologous chondrocyte transplantation with a stable 3D matrix, knee injuries (femoral condyle, tibia plateau, patella), ankle injuries (talus) or hip injuries (acetabulum) can be treated with the patient ’s own cells. For this procedure, cells are multiplied in the laboratory, and then re-transplanted into the damaged area.

Hyaline articular cartilage cannot regenerate itself. However, chondrocytes (cartilage cells) can be multiplied in the laboratory with corresponding stimulation; they are re-used in the body and develop into hyaline articular cartilage.

Before chondrocyte transplantation, a small amount of cartilage tissue is arthroscopically removed from a healthy area that is under less strain from the knee. The cells are then cultivated for three weeks in vitro and in this time they are absorbed into a three-dimensional matrix. The matrix used consists of two components. These are a carrier fleece which forms the framework structure and a biological “glue” which fixes the homogenously distributed cells in the carrier fleece. This combination of the two matrix components provides the chondrocytes with an ideal three-dimensional environment which stimulates them to redifferentiate and thus assume their original morphology and function. As a result, the graft itself is mechanically stable, supple, flexible and can be cut to fit the size of defect. Due to these special properties, a new fixation technique (transosseous fixation) and arthroscopic transplantation are possible, and the indication can be extended. BioSeed®-C is intended for the treatment of extensive cartilage defects.

Chondrocyte transplantation is mainly carried out on patients who suffer from constant pain and impaired mobility because of individual or multiple cartilage damage,  measuring over 1. 5 cm2, caused by traumas or focal degenerative changes.

BioSeed®-Oral Bone

BioSeed®-Oral Bone is a bone graft cultivated from the patient's own cambium cells in the periosteum. The graft consists of a complex 3-dimensional cell system based on the patient's vital cells. Such grafts have been used successfully in other medical disciplines, such as orthopaedics and dermatology, for some time. For over 4 years, BioSeed®-Oral Bone has been used in jaw bone augmentation, such as sinus lift operations, but also in lateral onlay grafts and periodontology.
